Unity Goverment : PKR wants PAS to clear the air about unity talks

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — PKR president Datuk Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail wants PAS to clarify its stand on any form of talks with Umno.

She was referring to the PAS president’s comment at the party muktamar that PAS will not close the door on dialogue with other parties.

This has caused concern among its partners in Pakatan Rakyat (PR). Last year, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa attended secret unity talks with Umno.

“PKR’s stand is that it’s best for us to wait for an explanation from PAS leaders regarding the issue of a unity government or any form of talks with Umno,” said Wan Azizah in a statement to the media yesterday.

She added, however, that PKR will not bar nor question the intention of any party wishing to discuss issues of national importance.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has also called for PAS to explain its stand on the unity talks at the next PR meeting next week.

At the PAS muktamar which concluded on Sunday, Hadi had claimed that DAP and PKR had agreed to such a proposal but Lim insisted that such a thing had never been raised within PR.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said on Sunday that he will maintain an open attitude concerning the proposal to create a unity government as suggested by the PAS president pending more information.

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has also been aggressively courting PAS and repeated his invitation to start talks with Umno in a show on Astro Awani last night.

However, PAS central committee member Mujahid Yusof Rawa, who was on the show instead of Nasharudin, appeared to rebuff Khairy’s advances, saying that PAS cannot make any decision without consulting its
